Serie A's marks
Filippo Inzaghi (Juventus) - 6,28
Piacenza, 9-8-73
FORWARD
A Lippi’s won bet.
The choice to line up Inzaghi along with Del Piero could seem, at first, to be a little risky.
After a winning season with Vieri and Boksic, Juventus’ offense looked to be suddenly too light and the two “young cocks” were promptly requested to find the right harmony to play together.
“Pippo” is not as physically imposing as Ravanelli or Vieri, but has great guts, agility and an extraordinary ability to find himself at the right place inside the opposing goal-mouth.
As a result the couple Del Piero (21 goals)-Inzaghi (18 goals) worked so well that Cesare Maldini decided to take them both to the World Championship in France.
Pietro Vierchowod (Piacenza) - 6,27
Calcinate (BG), 6-4-59
DEFENDER
After playing as many as 19 seasons in Serie A, the “great old” of the Italian football is now 39.
However he still looks to be as eager to compete as he was at the age of 20.
After a difficult season with Milan, his career seemed to be finally over but suddenly his charism and experience became the corner-stones of Piacenza’s defense, leading Guerini’s team to stay in Serie A.
Wierchowod is now 40 years old but his physique is still strong and his commitment very high.
After Romanese, Como, Fiorentina, Roma, Samp, Juve and Milan, Pietro is now ready for another season with Piacenza.
Giancarlo Marocchi (Bologna) - 6,26
Imola, 4-7-65
MIDFIELDER
When after playing 8 seasons with Juventus he came back to Bologna, many twisted their mouths.
He was considered as one of those old players who decide to go back home to quietly enjoy the last scraps of their careers.
However 2 seasons were enough for Marocchi to win his fans’ esteem again.
At the age of 33, he quickly emerged as the enlightening playmaker of Ulivieri’s Bologna.
An inexhaustible leader for his teammates.
Behind the new Bologna that will play in Europe there is not just the talent of Roberto Baggio but also the silent work of its revived captain.
Paolo Negro (Lazio) - 6,26
Arzignano (VI), 16-4-72
DEFENDER
A flu changed his life.
Last November, in Piacenza, Nesta fell ill and Eriksson asked Negro to sacrifice himself and play as a central defender.
Paolo’s performance was good and just one month later, taking advantage of Lopez’s difficulties, he found himself playing as a starter along with Nesta.
Week after week they emerged as the strongest and most productive defensive couple of the Italian Serie A, and only during the last part of the season, after being defeated by Juventus, they showed some slowing down, like their teammates.
Less technical than Nesta but stronger as a man-on-man defender, Negro is an insuperable, tough wall inside the goal-mouth.
Didier Deschamps (Juventus) - 6,26
Bayonne (Fra), 15-10-68
MIDFIELDER
He arrived at Juventus along with Lippi and experienced all the different stages of his coach’s winning project.
After a first hard season of cohabitation with Paulo Sousa, Didier quickly developed into the only, true leader of Juventus’ midfield.
He is a very eclectic playmaker who can both defend and organize his team’s attacks.
Tough and tireless, Deschamps’ performances lately showed a little drop.
Nevertheless, however, his last season was, once again, a very productive one.
