Francesco Totti (Roma) - 6,58

Roma, 27-9-76
FORWARD
The little Prince of Porta Metronia eventually became the eighth King of Rome. After many years spent up and down between great performances and sudden moments of lethargy, Totti finally found the right consistency and quickly turned from a promising player into a real star. Zeman won his bet by successfully finding Totti’s right position and taking advantage of his talent. 13 goals and enlightening passes characterized a season in which he brilliantly emerged as a true leader. Nevertheless he wasn’t called to play the World Cup in France, because Maldini doesn’t trust the new Totti yet. The future, however, belongs to him.

Roberto Baggio (Bologna) - 6,56
Caldogno (VI) 18-2-67
FORWARD
Baggio had a mission to accomplish.

He didn’t look for revenge but he wanted convince everybody, and especially Cesare Maldini, that he was finally ready to compete again at the highest levels.
He succeeded by overcoming unexpected obstacles like the controversy that at some point during the last season involved him and his coach Renzo Ulivieri.
A controversy that probably turned into an additional spur for Roberto.
Ulivieri himself talked about a new Baggio at the end of the last season.
A great offensive talent who can also run and help his teammates defensively.
A modern player, perfect for today’s football, who can show meaningful numbers: 22 goals in 2308 minutes, in other words a goal every 104 minutes.
He just needed to play with more continuity after several years of bench and incomprehensions.
For this reason he chose a quiet city like Bologna to start again.
As a result he finished as the best Italian scorer of the season and only Ronaldo and Bierhoff scored more goals than him.
That was enough to convince Cesare Maldini and to accomplish his personal mission.

Oliver Bierhoff (Udinese) - 6,55
Karlsruhe (GER) 1-5-68
FORWARD

A season to frame.
A season spent competing with Ronaldo to finish as the best scorer of the Italian Championship.
Oliver and Ronaldo fighted until the last game of the season, when they both scored 2 goals.
That was the 10th time, last season, that Bierhoff scored 2 goals during the same game.
Altogether he scored as many as 27 goals over 32 games.
Angelillo’s record is still safe but nobody had been scoring so much after the Italian Serie A went back to 18 teams in 1988-89.
Bierhoff, in short won the challenge and once again, over the last 3 years, he conquered the apparently cold Friulians’ heart.
He is now a 30 years old mature giant, who scares his opponents when he wanders inside the penalty-area.
Last year he scored 10 goals by header and 15 through his right foot.
He has timing and sense of goal.
In spite of Vogts’ scanty cofidence, he was the great protagonist of the last European Championship and now he is eager to shine during the World Cup in France, where he will face Ronaldo once again.
Next year he’ll be back in Italy but with a new team.
Infact he went to Milan along with Zaccheroni, the coach to whom Bierhoff owes a big part of his explosion.

Edgar Davids (Juventus) - 6,53
Paramaribo (SUR, HOL) 13-3-73
MIDFIELDER

Milan considered Davids useless and Juventus’ interest for him sounded kind of weird.
“A rotten player is leaving” was the touched goodbye he received from Costacurta.
Davids, instead, proved to be be a very mature player able to lead Juventus’ midfield since the beginning of December.
A warrior who can run, defend and start the offensive action.
A talent with a great dribbling, a strong tackle and a bright understanding of the game.
His teammates and Lippi immediately welcomed him and learned how to deal with his character.
As a result his temper hasn’t been causing any problem in Turin so far and Edgar emerged as the most effective player of the Juventus’ last winning season.
A great revenge for him.

Luiz Ronaldo (Inter) - 6,52
Rio de Janeiro (BRA) 22-9-76
FORWARD
The “Fenomeno”.
The quiet face of today’s football.

A young player who was told to be careful because the Italian football is the hardest one in the world and it’s easy to burn out even if, not being 22 yet, you already own a “Golden Football”.
As a matter of fact, last December, as soon as his performances suffered a little drop, especially because of the cold continental winter, someone immediately twisted his mouth and started claiming that the Italian League is much tougher than the Holland, Brazilian and Spanish ones.
Ronaldo answered by scoring bunches of goals that maybe weren’t enough to lead Inter to win the Italian Championship, but were enough to win the UEFA Cup.
Altogether he scored 25 goals, just 2 less than last season best scorer Bierhoff.
No other foreign player had been scoring so much as a rookie in the Italian League.
Zico and Platini scored respectively 19 and 16 goals over their first Italian season.
Ronaldo is just 22 but he is already a very complete player.
He has coordination, creativity and technical skills.
He possesses an explosive progression that allows him to fly over his opponents.
In addition he shows witticism, humility and maturity.
For all these reasons he is nicknamed : “The Fenomeno”.
