Michel PLATINI
Like many others of the same age, also Platini used to make great dreams when he was still a child.
He used to dream endless football games in the backyard of his grandfather’s bar.
That place was always full of Italians arrived until there to work in Lorraine’s mines.
Also his grandfather arrived from Italy in search of fortune.
He was from Agrate Conturbia (Novara).
Michel’s idol was Pelé and every time he had the opportunity to sign a piece of paper he amused himself by altering his last name in Peleatini.
When he was requested to fill in the form necessary to get his first identity card, he wrote that his profession was: football player.
The office clerk explained him that “football player” wasn’t exactly his profession.
But he was wrong.
Michel didn’t become like Pelé, he became just Platini.
Unique like any top-notch player.
Unique like his own natural way to be a football artist.
Still a child he didn’t seem to have the right physique and his friends used to nickname him “raz” (short for “rase bitume” which in other words meant “shortie”).
He wasn’t tall but he had plenty of talent and good models to follow.
At the age of 12, his father Aldo took him to Metz to see the great Kubala, and Michel decided that he would be his main model.
5 years later Platini signed his first contract with Nancy for 6 thousand francs per month.
He made his debut the 3rd of May 1973 (Nancy-Nimes-3-1).
The first 2 goals arrived a couple of weeks later Lyon-Nancy-2-4.
Nancy was a sort of second family, nearby his home.
Day after day football turns from a simple, amusing game into a real, professional career.
His physique is still not very athletic but his greatness keeps on growing through those magic feet and a natural talent that can’t be taught.
Platini grows and the his popularity grows with him.
Meanwhile he also made his debut with the national team against Czechoslovakia.
A special day, in a stadium full of history (Princes’ Park of Paris), during which Platini became, once for all, adult.
An exciting debut in front of a great crowd, where Michel felt lost for awhile, but, as usual, he didn’t let anybody realize it.
Meanwhile his destiny meant also Italy.
That Italy of his grandfather’s stories and that Italy of Michel’s summer holidays in Agrate Conturbia with his relatives.
The 8th of February 1978 Platini faced Italy for the first time and beat Zoff twice, scoring 2 goals through his famous free-kicks.
The first one was considered irregular, but the second one led France to tie definitively the game (2-2).
In 1978-79 Nancy won the French Cup, and shortafter Michel began a new experience with St. Etienne.
Here, just after the World Cup in Argentina, Platini’s notoriety got the final seal.
St. Etienne was the engine of French football and Platini quickly became its leader.
An unforgettable French champion like Raymond Kopa recognized Michel as his rightful heir while the fans fell in love with this skinny youngster, who still didn’t have a strong physique but an huge talent able to made up for it.
Platini was a sort of living fable.
The ugly duckling that, playing football, suddenly turns into a beautiful swan.As a result Italy crossed again his life.
This time not through his grandfather’s stories or his summer holidays, but because of Juventus.
Once again in Paris, once again against Italy (23th of February 1982), Platini scored and played his best game ever with his national team.
Gianni Agnelli watched the game and after falling in love with him decided to bring Platini in Italy.
Liam Brady was supposed to couple with Boniek that season, but Agnelli imposed his new French favourite.
Brady was traded to Sampdoria and Boniperti quickly signed Platini for just 148 millions of Italian Lira.
A deal wich revealed itself to be a true real bargain, both technically and economically.
Agnelli however wanted Platini just because of his talent.
Because Michel exactly represented Agnelli’s idea of football.
Fun, naturalness and essentiality.
Platini played football with such an happiness and style that made him so unique and unrepeatable.
However also the best ones every once in awhile have to face bad moments and Platini’s start in the Italian championship was kind of difficult.
In the first place some muscular problems prevented him from giving his best and some polemics began.
He had immediately to face critics and interferences in his privacy that he could hardly put up with.
He claimed that many judgments on him were just hasty and, often, incompatible with his idea of football.
The start was so tough that Platini even thought to give up.
However he decided to stay because going back to France would mean a personal defeat.
He just became to seclude himself, staying far from the media and answering the critics only through his performances.
All of a sudden things changed, Platini began to emerge showing his pure talent.
Step after step, working hard, Michel became a leader and even a scorer.
He was mainly a playmaker able to open the field for his teammates offering them bunches of opportunities to score.
However he personally emerged as the best scorer of the Italian Championship for as many as 3 seasons in a row.
Platini was a perfectionist willing to train hard and improve his magic free-kicks.
Not just talent and ingeniousness but also commitment and practice.
His happiness was always moderate, made by smiles tinged with melancholy.
His happiness was Juventus.
Together Platini and Juventus won 2 Italian Championships (1983-84 and 1985-86) and 1 Italy Cup (1982-83).
Then 1 Cup of Cups, 1 Mundialito, 1 European Supercup and 1 Intercontinental Cup.
In addition, Michel won for 3 years in a row the Golden Football (1983-85).
Just one piece was missing.
The Cup of Champions (now Champions League).
The 29th of May 1985 was supposed to be the day of the final seal.
The day of the biggest celebration.
However Juventus-Liverpool turned into a tragedy because of the English hooligans’ madness that left as many as 39 victims on the stands of the Heysel stadium of Brussels.
Juventus and Liverpool didn’t have any other option but playing that cursed game which for many of those players revealed itself to be a real nightmare.
Platini led his Club to the history but at the same time proved to be deeply hurt by such a tragedy.
His Italian experience, however, wasn’t over yet.
Italy, by then, was definitively penetrated in his heart.
During the following 2 seasons Juventus won another Italian Title and the Intercontinental Cup, while Michel began to keep himself further and further from the spotlight, rejecting whatever showing-off.
The 17th of May 1987 he played his last game with Juventus (Juventus-Brescia-2-1), after 222 games,
103 goals and a string of achievements that sound enough to turn Platini into a living legend.
Another chapter of his story regards his Country and its national team.
He gave all his best to lead France to accomplish as much as never it did before.
In 1984 he drove his team to win its first international Title in 80 years of French football: the European Championship.
Platini also took part in 4 World Championship, but in this case disappointments exceeded achievements.
France finished 4th in Spain and especially 3rd in Mexico, where expectations were much higher.
After quitting as a player, then, Platini experienced a new challenge, becoming the coach of his national team.
The 18th of November 1988 he made his losing debut in Belgrade (Jugoslavia-France-3-2).
His last game was another defeat, this time the 17th of June 1992 in Malmo (Denmark-France-2-0).
Two significant losses that produced disappointing consequences.
In the first case France couldn’t qualify for the World Cup in Italy, in 1990.
The second defeat, instead, meant a burning ending for the French dreams during the European Championship in Sweden.
As a result, the 2nd of July 1992, exactly while F.I.F.A. announced that the 1998 World Cup would be played in France, Platini announced his intention to quit.
Today “le Roi” Michel leads the committee that has been organizing the French World Cup over the last 5 years.
He still recognizes how important Juventus was for him and says that Trapattoni and Boniperti taught him how to become a good coach and a good manager.
He keeps on smoking the same 20 cigarettes that he used to smoke when he was a player, and claims that, in any case, he would never had the right physique.
However he had the talent and he was able to run the ball without needing to run himself.
He dreamt to become like Pelé, and we all know that he succeeded.
HIS FAMOUS STATEMENTS
About his family: “My family is very important for me. My parents taught me the importance of justice and happiness.
I was trained to appreciate not only the material aspect of things but especially that sense of accomplishment that one feels in achieving them.
Also my football career was driven by this principle”.
About his origins: “It’s a great luck having the opportunity to learn and embody two different cultures at the same time.
Then the nationalistic feelings must fade if we want Europe to be united for real”.About his doubts: “The beginning of my Italian experience was pretty tough and at some point I was even about to quit.
However Trapattoni and my teammates understood me and proved to be very helpful”.
About football: “My idea of football is kind of simple: cheerfulness if we have the ball, courage if our opponents do.
I don’t know what fantasy is. Maybe it’s something that belongs poets.
My receipt is: work and brain”.
About his qualities: “My physique is not athletic at all. If I didn’t keep on training I should quit”.
About the national team: “Our third place in Mexico was very disappointing. We wanted to win and that would be a dream of my childhood coming true”.
About Juventus: “I chose the most prestigious Club in Europe.
I felt very excited when Agnelli’s car came to pick me up”.
About Agnelli: “He is very classy. He doesn’t show off his richness.
Everybody would like to have an uncle like him”.
About Italy: “My grandfather went to France to provide himself with the necessaries to survive.
I came in Italy for the same reason, and for curiosity”.
Still about Italy: “In Italy football is not a sport, it’s a sort of religion and wins are much more important than anywhere else.
I’m not in exhile, I just wanted to recover my origins”.
About his master: “I have a great master: my father. And 2 important principles: to have fun and to help people to have fun”.
Still about Juventus: “Champions don’t last forever, but Juventus will be there also after Platini”.
About the end of his career: “I love football and I owe it my success.
However I won’t get old playing football and nobody should tell me when to quit, because by then I will have made my choice already”.HIS WORLD CUP.
About Italy at France 98: “I waited for Italy to qualify with some anxiety.
And not just because of my Italian origins but because a World Cup without Italy would be an unsound Championship”.
About the main absentees: “I regret the absence of Uruguay, which is the only ex-world champion that didn’t qualify, and the absence of Portugal.
There are so many Portuguese immigrants in France, who work really hard and that would deserve some happiness”.
About Africa and the “new” football: “I’m happy about the presence of the African national teams.
Not just because of their colourful fans but also because of the creativity and the spontaneity that their players use to put in the game.
These are things that give me cheerfulness and hope”.
Direction for use: “I know very well how World Championships are.
I know that players arrive there physically and mentally tired, after more and more intense football seasons.
However only those who can save some physical freshness and some technical brightness will be really able to compete to win the World Cup”.
A moment of joy for anybody: “Usually the World Cup reflects the spirit of the hosting Country.
In Italy was a very big popular celebration while in the U.S. was great inside the stadiums but desolating outside.
We’ll try to organize an human event, without grandeur, but able to involve also those who are not crazy for our sport.
Our message is: It’s beautiful a world that plays”.
The importance to be normal: “There haven’t been many rumours around the next World Cup.
That’s fine because it means that we didn’t have to face any serious problem.
Journalists usually write about trains and airplanes that are late, but our normality has been unobserved”.
About the system: “32 teams are almost too many for the World Cup.
However the system we are going to use (preliminary groups, only the first two teams of each group admitted to the second round, 3 points for every win etc.) should cause less calculations, more bravery and maybe even more goals”.
About his predictions: “Brazil is the main favourite, but exactly for this reason everybody is going to face them with the greatest attitude and concentration.
The same can be said about Ronaldo.
I would really like to play with him.
Any number “10” would love to have a talent like him to throw the ball to”.About France’s ambitions: “France is very strong athletically and has at least a couple of great talents like Zidane and Djorkaeff.
However also our team will need to save enough physical and mental energy for June in order to be really competitive”.About the unattainable dream: “I have the Cup in my office, but I don’t even dare to touch it.
The World Cup can’t belong to a manager, but only to someone who won it on the field”.
About his future: “ Do Pelé and Beckenbauer want me to become the next President of FIFA?
Well they are two great connoisseurs. Aren’t they”.
About Juventus: “Agnelli supposed that I could come back as a President after 1998.
If Juventus stays in his hands I could consider this option.
However, right now, I just want to focus on the next World Cup to prove that I can be a good manager and not just a person recommended”.
